London students to unveil the 'home of the future' in new design competition

Winner of UNITE’s ‘Future Room’ competition to be rewarded with £2,500 and an exclusive work placement

London students are being given an opportunity to win £2,500 and the chance to make their mark in a top architectural agency in a new competition to design the student home of the future.

Student accommodation provider UNITE has launched the Future Room competition in collaboration with Blueprint, the leading magazine of architecture and design and Superfusionlab, an innovative architectural practice which has installed, exhibited and designed projects around the world.

Entrants will be asked to look ahead to 2050 and think about how students will study, interact and socialise in the future. They must also identify and visualise the things that will aid the university experience in terms of living space, social life and intellectual development.

The competition is open to all art, design and architecture students in London as well as others studying in the capital who have fresh, original ideas to share.

Entries must be received by 22 March, after which they will be judged by UNITE, Peter Kelly, Acting Editor of Blueprint and Superfusionlab. The winner will be announced in April.

All entries must comprise of:

  • One or two A3 designs accompanied by 250 words of copy
  • Designs can be sketched or created digitally
  • Entries must be emailed to futureroom@unite-group.co.uk in JPEG format in low (72dpi) and high (300dpi) resolutions or posted to UNITE, 22 Endell Street, London WC2H 9AD by 5pm 22 March 2010

For further details, submission requirements and terms and conditions, students can visit www.unite-students.com/futureroom.

Neville Snell, UNITE’s London Operations Director, said: “We’re always challenging traditional notions of student living space and now we’re looking for a London student to take this to the next level.”

Peter Kelly of Blueprint said: “We’re looking for the next generation of London’s student talent to inspire us with innovative designs. Ultimately, entries need to do what all great design does – be visually impressive, full of imaginative ideas and capture the attention of the wider public”.

Nathaniel Kolbe, Director of Superfusionlab said: “This is a great opportunity for students to express their design talent in an area where they have first hand experience. It will be fascinating to see how each individual approaches the brief and envisages the future of student living.”

Future Room is the latest initiative from UNITE designed to stimulate and reward innovative student thinking. Previous projects have included photography competitions and a challenge to immortalise ‘Inspirational Londoners’ in new, original artworks.
