Episode 5 – The Story So Far

When we launched our Accommodation Matters podcast back in September last year, we hoped it would become a useful place for universities and accommodation providers to discuss current issues, particularly in light of the on-going Covid-19 pandemic. It’s certainly been popular to date.

And while there’s no doubt that Covid-19 has had, and will continue to have, an impact on students’ living and residential experience, certainly during the rest of this academic year, there’s also plenty of other topics for discussion in the Higher Education sector. Universities remain open, despite Government Covid-19 restrictions, albeit the student experience might not quite be what it once was.

We recognise that this is a challenging time for students. With that in mind this month, we have put together a mid-season highlights episode, which is a break from our normal routine. In it our host Darren Ellis, Unite Students’ Higher Education Engagement Director, looks back over a selection of key highlights from the previous episodes we’ve recorded over recent months.

Over the course of the previous four episodes, we’ve been joined by a wide variety of guests, including representative from the Higher Education Policy Institute, UCAS, Universities UK International, Student Minds, the universities of Nottingham, Liverpool John Moores, UWE Bristol, Sheffield, Glasgow, and the University of the Arts – as well as our own in-house specialists at Unite Students. Previous episodes are available to listen to here.

This episode has been designed to provide an insight into some of the areas we’ve covered since September. If you’ve not listened to an episode before, this one is the perfect chance to gain an understanding of the types of conversations we’ve been having since we launched in Autumn 2020.

Each month, we host a roundtable chat with a different panel of guests from university student accommodation leaders, national policy experts and subject specialists. Future episodes will focus on current topical issues and explore the student living experience, while also reflecting on what might be coming over the horizon.

We’ll be back next month with a new panel of guests.
